Rain across various regions of Argentina and weeks on end of cloudy days in Buenos Aires. Will we head into spring with cold or warm weather? It’s still too early to tell, but the weather map for Buenos Aires is shifting these days with the arrival of a cold air mass of polar origin that will cause temperatures to plummet this weekend.
Although the National Weather Service (SMN) has not issued a formal yellow alert for extreme cold for the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and the Greater Buenos Aires Area (AMBA), the arrival of this winter front marks a significant drop in temperatures, with lows that could reach 2 degrees.
The cold snap timeline: when and how much temperatures will drop
The polar air will begin to make itself strongly felt starting Thursday, September 3, driven by gusts of southerly wind that will lower temperatures and clear the cloudy skies. The coldest conditions will peak on Friday and Saturday mornings, with the week’s lowest temperatures in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires ranging between 4 and 6 C.
Weather forecast for the AMBA:
- Thursday: Low of 8 °C | High of 14 °C — Southerly wind with gusts, clearing up.
- Friday: Low of 4 °C | High of 12 °C — Very cold in the morning, clear skies.
- Saturday: Low of 5 °C | High of 13 °C — Intense cold at dawn, sunny in the afternoon.
- Sunday: Low of 7 °C | High of 15 °C — Slight rise in temperature, pleasant afternoon.
In the AMBA region and more distant areas such as Pilar, Cañuelas, or Ezeiza, the nighttime drop in temperature will be more severe, with lows between 2 and 3 degrees and a chance of morning agricultural frosts.
Service tips to prevent the effects of the cold
- Be careful with carbon monoxide: When lighting gas heaters after days of humidity, make sure the flame is blue and maintain at least some cross-ventilation in the rooms.
- Dressing in “layers”: Although mornings are very cold, the afternoon sun raises the perceived temperature. Dressing in layers is the best way to adapt to the temperature contrast between the outdoors and heated indoor areas.
- Wind conditions along the Costanera and in parks: If you have outdoor plans near the river or in open spaces, keep in mind that the southerly wind significantly lowers the wind chill.
