Starting in April, traveling by bus or subway in Buenos Aires will cost more. If you feel like you’re paying a little more for transportation every month, it’s no coincidence: fares are updated monthly. Here’s a breakdown of transportation fares starting in April.
How much will transportation costs increase in April
The public transportation system in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area has been adjusting its fares month by month for quite some time now. Following the increases in February and March, a new hike is coming in April.
For buses, national routes already raised the minimum fare to $700 in March. Now, starting April 1, a new adjustment is being applied to fares for routes in the City of Buenos Aires (CABA) and the Province, following the formula of inflation plus an additional amount. Thus, the minimum bus fare is $715.24.
Currently, some reference prices are:
- In CABA: the minimum fare is around $681.85 with a registered SUBE card. Starting in April , it will rise to $715.24.
- In the province: it can exceed $830 for the initial leg of the trip.
Subway: fares are also rising and will exceed $1,400
The Buenos Aires subway fare is no exception. The fare schedule calls for a new increase in April that will push the fare above $1,400.
This adjustment is part of a two-stage schedule:
- March: the fare is around $1,300
- April: rising to approximately $1,414
SUBE: the difference between having it registered or not
The good news: discounts for frequent users remain in place, which may help ease the impact a bit if you use the service every day.
Since 2024, public transportation in the AMBA has applied an automatic adjustment formula consisting of monthly inflation plus an additional percentage. One of the key points remains the SUBE card:
- With a registered SUBE card: you pay the standard fare
- Without registering: you could end up paying almost double
In addition, negative balances also have limits:
- Up to $1,200 for buses and the subway
How to ride for free with SUBE
If you have a disability certificate, you can ride public transportation in the AMBA (buses, trains, subways, and premetros) for free, provided you meet these requirements:
✔ Have a valid Unique Disability Certificate (CUD)
✔ Apply for the Social Fare or the corresponding pass
✔ Have a SUBE card registered in your name
This benefit allows you to ride buses and the subway for free with your SUBE card, and in some cases also includes a companion if indicated on the certificate.
