“Principio de Éxtasis”: The Must-See Ballet About Borges Premiering at the Teatro Colón
If you thought Buenos Aires’ theater scene couldn’t surprise you anymore, get ready—the Teatro Colón is pulling out all the stops this September to host a world premiere based on the work of one of Argentina’s most internationally renowned—yet also most quintessentially Buenos Aires—authors. The work *Jorge Luis Borges*, with *The Aleph* as its starting point, comes to the stage through dance, performed by the best of the Teatro Colón ballet company for the exclusive run of nine performances of *Principio de éxtasis*.

This production, commissioned specifically by the theater, is a journey inspired by the imagination of the great Jorge Luis Borges. The ballet draws on his short story collection *The Aleph* (1949) and the poem “Absence” (1923) as its starting point to create a unique performance that brings to life—through the dancers’ bodies—his universe of labyrinths, mirrors, and literary ecstasy.
Borges at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires alongside Julio Bocca, Santaolalla, and Darín
What makes “Principio de éxtasis” truly unmissable is the constellation of stars and creators who bring it to life. The direction and choreography are by Spanish maestro Goyo Montero, who also designed the costumes, while the set design bears the signature of visual artist Eduardo Basualdo.
Adding to this visual spectacle is a top-notch soundtrack: the original music was composed exclusively by Gustavo Santaolalla, accompanied by sound design by Owen Belton. And as if that weren’t enough, the show features the voice-over of Ricardo Darín, who narrates selected texts that intertwine with the movements of more than 50 dancers on stage. All of this, of course, under the artistic direction of Julio Bocca at the helm of the Teatro Colón’s Permanent Ballet Company.
