You walk through the streets of Buenos Aires without stopping and you didn’t know that under your feet there is a ghost subway station, a relic of Buenos Aires’ railway past that was a movie location and that is still intact under your feet although no one can see it anymore. We tell you all about the ghost station San José Vieja.
San José Vieja, the ghost station that does not appear on the subway map of CABA but is under your feet.
In the neighborhood of Constitución, or rather, underneath, there is a subway station that has not been on the maps of the subway network for a long time, but it is still there, intact. It is the old San José station, which does not appear on the current subway maps, but its history is still alive.
The original San José station belonged to Line E, and was closed in 1966, when the route was modified to bring it closer to downtown Buenos Aires. The line was extended to Bolívar, which caused the closure of several previous stops, including this station, which was replaced by the current San José.
The old station, now a ghost station used as a repair and maintenance workshop, remains underground, closed to the public, but intact in its structure, perhaps feeding urban legends and stories to tell to those who do not know they have it under their feet.
A ghost station starring in movies
Did you know that many scenes of the 1996 Argentine film Moebius were shot without official permits, taking advantage of the less traveled nooks and crannies of the subway? Moebius used the abandoned infrastructure to depict fictitious stations such as Dock Sud and Parque. At the time, the film was very popular, and in fact in the new San José station there are murals that make reference to the film.
