If you thought that Buenos Aires is so saturated with options that nothing can surprise you anymore, we have to tell you that we are going to put your beliefs in doubt. Because it is exactly in one of the most bustling corners of the city, Corrientes Avenue and Callao, a restaurant from the 20’s was inaugurated, which also has an impressive scenery and is a direct trip to a past that can dazzle you. All you have to do is go down to Albur, the restaurant in the basement of this building at 435 Callao Ave.
Albur, or how a theater hidden in a basement resurfaces almost 100 years after its decline.
At the intersection of Corrientes and Callao avenues, under your feet, hides an architectural jewel of the 1920’s called Albur . It is a concert restaurant that combines haute cuisine and live shows. A century ago, this space housed the “El 35” Theater, and today, after a meticulous restoration, it is back to its original splendor.
What is now Albur was in the 1920’s, the “El 35” Theater where many renowned actors made their debut. The “El 35” theater was abandoned for more than four decades until Raquel Rodrigo, owner of El Tropezón and Clásica y Moderna, rediscovered it and decided to restore it.
To create Albur, the original elements of the theater, the iron doors, a scissors elevator and the centenary checkerboard floors were preserved. Other details that you have to see were added and the result is an atmosphere that evokes the elegance of the 1920s, but adapted to today’s tastes.
What you can do in Albur that you won’t do in any other restaurant
First, as soon as you go down the antique elevator you will feel that you are in a different and authentic place. You will be able to eat like in one of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires, with traditional and modern flavors. In addition, you will enjoy their two live orchestras, “Albur Tango” and “La Albur Band”, which together with jazz singers and dancers, present daily shows. And if that were not enough, you will look around and think: How could this legacy have been hidden and secret for so long from the eyes of those of us who live in Buenos Aires, right under our feet?
Important fact. At Albur you go in black tie, so dust off that suit or that dress you never had the chance to wear because here you are going to wear it.
