On the corner of Avenida Federico Lacroze and Fraga, in Chacarita, there is a corner between coffee tables and walls covered with cameras of all times. Is it a photography themed bar? Is it a museum? It is both. Discover this hidden museum in Chacarita with more than 600 cameras, music nights, workshops and a themed bar full of delicacies.
Chacarita hides its own museum: a collection of 4,000 old cameras, jazz nights and even a themed restaurant.
This hidden museum in this corner of Chacarita is the Simik Museum. This museum was born in February 2002, when the advertising photographer Alejandro Simik decided to inaugurate the first showcase dedicated to show the evolution of photography and its cameras in the Palacio bar. This museum gathers more than 4000 images and 600 antique cameras, some real gems such as a French stereoscopic viewfinder from 1893 capable of displaying 220 glass or paper views.
The walls of the bar are covered with these cameras that tell you the history of photography and surround you while you are having breakfast or a snack. Everywhere you look there are cameras and it is precisely this collection that makes having a coffee at the Museo de Fotografía de Chacarita an experience.
Access to the museum is free and it is not necessary to consume anything to visit it. Did you know that it was declared of Cultural Interest by the Buenos Aires Legislature on two occasions? In addition, since 2011, the Palacio bar has been recognized as a Notable Bar of Buenos Aires. So it is a remarkable museum as well.
Nights of music surrounded by the history of photography in Buenos Aires.
Visiting the Simik Photographic Museum itself is already an experience you have to have. But let us tell you that, in addition to courses and workshops, this photographic museum-bar has music nights and gastronomic proposals almost every day. Don’t miss its jazz nights because it is a meeting point where the past of photographs coexists with live music and the atmosphere of a porteño café.
