Netflix has just confirmed the premiere of El Eternauta, the most anticipated Argentine series of 2025. The first television adaptation of the comic by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López arrives on the platform on April 30. But do you know exactly what El Eternauta is about? If you haven’t read it, nor do you know its story, these are the reasons why everyone is talking about it.
What is El Eternauta about and why is it the series of 2025 on Netflix?
Originally published in 1957 in the magazine Hora Cero Semanal, El Eternauta is a classic Argentine comic book that marked generations of readers. The protagonist is Juan Salvo, an ordinary man who sees how in Buenos Aires begins to fall a snowfall, strange, unusual for the city. He quickly discovers that the snowfall is toxic and kills everything it touches, that there are few survivors and that in reality, something more terrible is hidden behind the snowfall.
El Eternauta is much more than a work of science fiction, it is an allegory of resistance, the collective struggle of the survivors who unite and the essence of the human being in certain circumstances, where the other can also be an enemy. In addition, its author, Héctor G. Oesterheld, was kidnapped and disappeared by the military dictatorship in 1977. That year his four daughters had already been kidnapped and murdered: Diana (24), Beatriz (19), Estela (25) and Marina (18). Two of them were pregnant. Elsa Sanchez, Oesterheld’s widow, raised Martin, her grandson, since he was handed over to her by the repressive forces and it was him, a survivor of the family, who collaborated closely to make the project of El Eternauta on Netflix come to fruition.

Under the direction of Bruno Stagnaro, who also co-wrote the script with Ariel Staltari, the cast includes Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, Marcelo Subiotto, Claudio Martínez Bel, Orianna Cárdenas, Mora Fisz and Staltari himself.
