Spring has arrived, and with longer days and more pleasant temperatures, Buenos Aires invites you to enjoy its outdoor spaces more and more.
Among the many ways to enjoy the nice weather, this one offers a chance to travel to Southeast Asia without leaving the city: the Water Lantern Festival will transform the Palermo Racetrack into a scene straight out of a movie.
A night of lanterns, music, and wishes in Palermo

The Water Lantern Festival is, essentially, a large outdoor celebration where each person creates their own lantern, writes a wish, a memory, or a message on it, and then sets it afloat on the water alongside the rest of the participants. The idea is that this collective moment of hundreds of lit lanterns also serves as a pause to reflect, remember someone special, or simply enjoy the scene.
In the city, the event will take place at the Palermo Racetrack this weekend, October 17 and 18, with activities starting at 4 p.m. and the lantern release scheduled for 7 p.m. During those hours, there will be live music, food, drinks, and activities to keep you entertained while you wait for the sun to set.
Upon arrival, you’ll receive the materials you need to personalize your lantern. Then, when it’s time to release them, everyone gathers by the water and lets their lanterns float away at the same time, creating a scene filled with tiny points of light reflecting on the surface.
What is the Water Lantern Festival?
The festival is a contemporary celebration inspired by Asian traditions that use glowing lanterns as symbols of hope, renewal, and good wishes.

One of its cultural inspirations is the Yi Peng, a traditional festival in northern Thailand, particularly well-known in Chiang Mai. During the festivities, the lanterns light up the sky and are part of practices linked to Buddhist beliefs.
Although the Water Lantern Festival doesn’t exactly replicate a traditional Thai ceremony, it shares the idea of using light as a symbol of connection. It’s also known for combining music, community activities, and moments of reflection in an outdoor setting.
Unlike traditional festivals, this event focuses on creating a shared experience centered on light, creativity, and connection between people.
