You’re renewing your driver’s license , you want to sell your car, or you’ve simply received that email notification that nobody likes to get: you have a traffic ticket. But don’t worry: we’ve put together this practical guide so you know exactly how much traffic tickets cost today, how to check them in two minutes from your cell phone, and how to spend as little as possible to settle them (by paying with a discount).
How much each traffic ticket costs: The map of updated rates
In both Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires, fines aren’t calculated as a fixed amount in pesos, but rather through Fixed Units (UF), a formula that’s updated based on the price of the highest-octane gasoline.
In CABA: One UF is equivalent to $1,173.08 (the price of half a liter of premium gasoline).
In the Province of Buenos Aires: One UF is equivalent to $2,281.00 (the cost of one full liter of premium gasoline).
To avoid any surprises, here are the reference amounts for the most common violations:
- Illegal parking / Blocking a ramp: Starting at $117,308 (CABA) Starting at $114,050 (Province)
- Cell phone use while driving: Starting at $117,308 (CABA) Starting at $228,100 (Province)
- Failure to wear a seatbelt or helmet: Starting at $117,308 (CABA) Starting at $228,100 (Province)
- Running a red light: Starting at $351,924 (CABA) Starting at $228,100 (Province)
- Minor speeding: Starting at $175,962 (CABA) Starting at $342,150 (Province)
- Serious speeding (>140 km/h): Up to $4,692,320 (CABA) Up to $2,281,000 (Province)
The golden “trick”: 50% voluntary payment
If you admit to the violation and want to get it out of the way quickly, you can pay your traffic ticket at a discount. If you pay within the Voluntary Payment period (generally within the first 40 business days after you were notified), you automatically receive a 50% discount on the minimum fine amount.

If you decide to file an appeal or dispute with the traffic court, arguing that the ticket is incorrect, and the ruling goes against you, you’ll lose the 50% discount and have to pay 100% of the updated amount plus administrative fees. Only file a dispute if you have clear evidence (such as photos showing a license plate error or proof that you sold the vehicle before the date in question).
Step-by-step: How to check and pay your traffic tickets from your cell phone
No need to stand in line or waste your morning. Everything is handled 100% digitally.
If the ticket is in CABA:
Message Boti, the City Government’s chatbot, on WhatsApp (+54 9 11 5050-0147).
Select the “Traffic Violations” option and enter your ID number or your car’s license plate number.
If you have outstanding citations, Boti gives you the option to generate a VP (Voluntary Payment) on the spot or schedule a virtual hearing with a traffic officer if you want to file a defense.
If the ticket is from the Province of Buenos Aires:
Go to the official InfraccionesBA website (infraccionesba.gba.gob.ar).
Search by license plate number or your ID number.
From there, you can download the coupon with a 50% discount to pay via online banking or submit a “Virtual Appeal” by attaching your photos or documents.
Do traffic tickets expire? The 5-year rule
Keep in mind that by law (Law 451 in CABA and Law 13,927 in the Province), traffic violations are subject to a statute of limitations of 5 years from the date they were committed. If more than that time has passed and you haven’t received any court summonses or had any interruptions in the process, you can request that the violation be removed from your record free of charge.
