To commemorate Women’s Day, their struggle and legacy, we propose a different Women’s Day tour.
From Puerto Madero to Retiro, this women’s day tour is ideal for March 8th, but also, why not, for any day of the year. It is always a good time to discover something different in Buenos Aires.
The city is full of places that honor the role of women and works made by important Argentine women that, although they often go unnoticed, are the best symbol of the feminine and you can see it in the streets, parks and sculptures of the city.
Women’s day tour: first stop. Puerto Madero.
Puerto Madero is one of the youngest neighborhoods of the city and over the years has become an ideal area to go out at night, go to dinner at some of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires and, why, just enjoy the river that divides it in two, stroll and enjoy the afternoon.
In Puerto Madero all the streets that run through Puerto Madero are named after women. In case you didn’t know, only 3% of the streets in Buenos Aires are named after women – most of them are in Puerto Madero – and 61% are named after men.
So when you are doing your Women’s Day tour and walking around Puerto Madero, you can find out who are some of the women who name those streets:
- Carola Lorenzini, the first woman flight instructor in South America.
- Cecilia Grierson, Argentina’s first female physician
- Alicia Moreau de Justo, organizer of the First World Women’s Congress
- Aimé Painé, the last Mapuche princess
- Juana Manso, writer and educator
- Emma de la Barra, author of the first “best seller” in Argentina who had to publish under a male pseudonym.
Second stop. The Argentine Women’s Park.
The Parque Mujeres Argentinas is a beautiful park full of jacarandas, araucarias and magnolias. You will find it in the neighborhood of Puerto Madero, between the streets Manuela Manso, Marta Linch, Av. de los Italianos and Manuela Saenz.
You have probably passed by the Parque de las Mujeres a thousand times without realizing its name or what it represents.
Its location could not be better, because every street in Puerto Madero is a tribute to Argentine women, on 8M and every day.
Third stop. The Women’s Bridge.
The Puente de la Mujer (Women’s Bridge) is one of the main attractions of Puerto Madero and it is a must to visit it during the day or at night . It is located at the height of dam 3 of Puerto Madero and is the work of the architect Santiago Calatrava.
During the day it allows you to cross from one side of Puerto Madero to the other and at night, with its lights on, it is a perfect night postcard to finish a dinner walking along the river. The Puente de la Mujer is an imposing rotating bridge that symbolizes a couple dancing tango and is an unmissable postcard for walks, photos and visits.
Women’s Day tour: fourth stop. Fountain of the Nereids.
Lola Mora was one of the first sculptors in Argentina and South America, an artistic reference of her time and sculptor of the Fountain of the Nereids.
It is a beautiful sculpture representing the birth of Venus, carved in carrara marble in 1902, and that the authorities of the time considered too indecorous, daring. Many even doubted that a woman had the strength to carve it.
Fortunately, despite the controversies and prejudices surrounding her work, the Fountain of the Nereids, or why not, Fountain of Lola Mora, shines in the Costanera Sur in Puerto Madero and keeps alive the art of its great sculptor.
Women’s Day tour: fifth stop. The Kavanagh Building.
The Kavanagh Building is an iconic building of Buenos Aires and was, in the 19th century, the tallest concrete skyscraper in Argentina and South America.
Corina Kavanagh was the woman who made the decision to build this 120-meter building, which today, despite no longer being the tallest on the continent, attracts the attention of anyone who walks through the Retiro neighborhood.
The Kavanagh building is part of the UNESCO World Heritage of Modern Architecture and is a National Historic Monument.
