This Wednesday, January 14, much of Argentina faces very high and extreme levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and in several regions, the UV index will exceed thresholds considered dangerous to health. What is the situation in Buenos Aires and how can you protect yourself?
According to meteorological records, in CABA and the Province of Buenos Aires, the UV index will be close to 10, which is very high risk. Meanwhile, in the north of the country and the Cuyo region, extreme levels are expected, which could reach 12 or more, implying significant danger even with brief exposure.
Why ultraviolet radiation is a concern in Buenos Aires
The warning comes at a key time of year, when outdoor activities and time spent in the sun increase. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), UV radiation can cause serious and cumulative damage to the body, even when exposure seems short or not very intense.
Ultraviolet radiation is a form of solar energy that, in high concentrations, can seriously affect health.
Among the main associated risks are:
👉Skin cancer, including melanoma.
👉Cataracts and eye damage.
👉Premature aging of the skin.
👉Decreased immune system defenses.
Sun damage accumulates over a lifetime, so daily prevention is key, even on cloudy days or when temperatures do not seem extreme.
What is the UV index and how to read it
The UV index indicates the intensity of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth’s surface and allows us to estimate the health risk:
👉Between 8 and 10: very high risk.
👉11 or higher: extreme risk.
At these levels, skin can burn in a matter of minutes if protective measures are not taken.
Recommendations for protecting yourself from the sun
👉Avoid direct exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
👉Seek shade whenever possible.
👉Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and reapply it every two hours.
👉Wear tightly woven clothing, preferably light-colored.
👉Wear wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective sunglasses.
