Getting a haircut or touching up your beard will never be the same when you visit the Buenos Aires barbershop in the basement of a jewel of the Belle Époque on Avenida de Mayo...
This is the secret barbershop in the basement of an Art Nouveau jewel on Avenida de Mayo.
In the heart of downtown, between offices and cafes, there is a building that seems to have stopped in time. Under its Liberty dome and behind an almost secret metal door that takes you to the basement hides a barbershop where getting a haircut is like traveling to the most elegant past of Buenos Aires.
This is Le Grand Patron, a hairdresser-barbershop that not only invites you to have a haircut or a shave, but a real immersion in the history of Buenos Aires. First of all, this barbershop is not in just any underground, but in the basement of a building built in 1913 by architect Bernardo Milli, one of the exponents of the Milanese Liberty style, the Italian version of Art Nouveau .
Its ornate façade, with wrought iron balconies and a dome, makes it one of the most admired architectural gems on Avenida de Mayo.
Le Grand Patron recreates the spirit of classic barbershops: it has leather armchairs, antique mirrors and period details and that elegant and mysterious atmosphere of old salons.
In addition, the salon houses an exhibition of original costumes from La Guerra Gaucha, the legendary Argentinean war of 1942. Such a space cannot be just for getting a haircut, so its owner also prepares wine tastings, exhibitions and events that make this hidden barbershop a well-hidden secret full of magic that you have to know.
Behind the facades of downtown there are still corners to be discovered and Le Grand Patron is one of them.
