A few meters away from Plaza de Mayo there is an old house with a door full of graffiti and a history that must be preserved: the door of Alsina 451 is not just any building, it is the house of Luca Prodan, the unmistakable voice of Sumo and one of the most enduring icons of national rock, the place where he lived his last days.
The house where Luca Prodan lived: from tenement to cultural bar
The building at Alsina 451 is a 19th century building that for many years functioned as a tenement (something common in the buildings of the historic center). At the end of 1987, Luca Prodan rented a room in that property, where he lived until December 22nd of that year, when he passed away. Luca Prodan’s house is today a shrine to fans from all over the country.
Decades later, the property was restored and today it functions as a cultural bar where emerging bands play, shows and concerts are held, and Luca’ s work is celebrated. The facade is covered with graffiti, phrases and writings of all kinds in honor and memory of Sumo’s leader and, despite the restoration, it was preserved as it is. In fact, if you walk through the door, it is almost like passing through a shrine: there are phrases, drawings, song lyrics and tributes written with marker, spray paint or even lipstick.
Alsina’s house has become an obligatory stop for fans of national rock, tourists and, of course, new generations that discover Sumo’s music have a place to go to pay tribute to its main voice. Every December, especially on December 22nd, fans come to remember him with songs. Have you ever visited Luca Prodan’s house?
