Argentina has just announced one of the most important transformations of its identification system with a new Argentine ID card featuring more technology, greater security, and a design in line with international standards. We tell you who needs to renew their ID card, the requirements, and how to do it.
The Argentine ID card is changing forever: who has to renew their chip ID card, requirements, and how to do it
The new ID card will come into effect on February 1, 2026, and for now, it will coexist with the previous models, which will remain valid until their expiration date. There is no mandatory mass replacement, but rather an update designed for the future. However, there are some ID cards that, even though they are still valid, must be renewed.
A new, more secure and durable ID card
The new ID card leaves behind the traditional format and becomes a multi-layer polycarbonate card, a material that is much more resistant to daily use. The information is no longer printed as before: it is now engraved with laser technology and special inks, which makes it more difficult to forge and better protects personal data.
In addition, the new Argentine ID card incorporates a contactless electronic chip, similar to those used in bank cards or SUBE cards. This will allow you to validate your identity more quickly in procedures, controls, and digital transactions, without the need for physical contact.

The new document has changed not only on the inside, but also on the outside. Its appearance and structure have been adapted to international standards. For those over 14 years of age, the ID card will include the national coat of arms, the inscription “República Argentina – Mercosur. Registro Nacional de las Personas. Ministerio del Interior” (Argentine Republic – Mercosur. National Registry of Persons. Ministry of the Interior), the words “Documento Nacional de Identidad” (National Identity Document) and a color photograph, facing forward. One detail that remains unchanged is the identification of Falklands War veterans, who will retain the inscription recognizing them as “Hero” or “Heroine.”
New Argentine ID card: who has to renew it
Renewal will only be mandatory if the ID card has expired or is damaged in such a way that it prevents the identity from being correctly verified, if you have to change it because you have reached the age of 6, 8, or 14 (in the case of children), or if you change your address, marital status, or gender. If your document is valid and in good condition, you do not have to change it now.
How to apply for the new ID card and how much it costs
The process begins online, using the Mi Argentina app or website. Once you have obtained an appointment, you must go in person to a RENAPER documentation center, where the process will be completed.
The new DNI already has official prices. The regular procedure for obtaining or renewing the document costs approximately $7,500, while the express version costs $18,500. If you need your DNI urgently, there are options such as the 24-hour DNI or the instant DNI, with prices ranging up to $29,500 and $40,500, respectively.
For foreign residents in Argentina, the regular fee is around $14,000. These amounts were established by the National Registry of Persons and are valid throughout the country.
