One of the most important and well-known cultural institutions in Buenos Aires is the Centro Cultural San Martín. It has been closed since 2024 and its restoration has finally been announced. How the renovation plan of the Centro Cultural San Martín will be, what will happen with its courses and events and when this iconic cultural center will reopen.
San Martín Cultural Center closed for renovation until 2027
The Centro Cultural General San Martín is starting a comprehensive work that covers all its spaces and that is going to last three years. The renovation plan of the most important cultural center in Buenos Aires contemplates a deep transformation of the 12-story building, including modernization of facilities, infrastructure improvements, aesthetic renovation, and technological updating.
The first tasks have already begun, with work on the underground pumping system and interventions on the glass façade of the tower on Paraná Street. In the coming months, the modernization of rooms A and B, waterproofing of ceilings, new electrical installations, reconditioning of floors, and redesign of the façade will be carried out.
Although the main building will be closed, film screenings, workshops and cycles such as Jazzología will continue to operate in venues such as the Teatro 25 de Mayo or the Bajo Plaza Building.
What about the Conservatory and Radio Ciudad
One of the major milestones of this renovation is the installation of the Manuel de Falla Conservatory of Music, which will finally have its definitive headquarters on the upper floors of the building. In addition, Radio de la Ciudad is temporarily relocated to the building where Radio Continental used to operate, in Palermo.
Inaugurated in 1970, the Centro Cultural General San Martín is an undisputed artistic pole, with important cultural cycles and renowned artists. Its dry square and the Sculpture Courtyard will also be renovated.
