If you need to run errands, go to work, or drive through downtown, take a minute to plan a different route because a protest is expected at the Obelisk this Wednesday, August 12, which will disrupt the usual flow of traffic and public transportation.
Why is there a march this Wednesday, August 12?
The Federal Committee for Science and Technology, together with teachers’ unions, CONICET researchers, and professionals from national universities, have called for a day of federal protest under the slogans “Science and Technology in Struggle” and “Show Your Support for Our Science, Education, and Sovereignty.” The march and protest are scheduled for this Wednesday, August 12, at the Obelisk.
What time does the march start, and which areas will be blocked off?
The rally for the march begins at 4:00 p.m., and the epicenter is the Obelisk. The first preparations and gatherings will start to become noticeable after noon, so you should avoid traveling between:
- Córdoba Avenue
- Belgrano Ave.
- Callao Ave. / Entre Ríos Ave.
- Leandro N. Alem Ave. / Paseo Colón
Areas of heaviest congestion:
- 9 de Julio Ave. and Corrientes Ave. (Obelisk, complete closure of traffic islands and center lanes).
- The section of Corrientes Avenue between Callao Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue.
- 9 de Julio Metrobús: Possible service interruptions or reduced service at the Obelisco Norte and Obelisco Sur stops as the number of protesters increases.
Bus detours and subway status
A fairly large protest is expected on 9 de Julio Avenue and surrounding avenues, so multiple bus lines will alter their usual routes starting at 2:00 or 3:00 p.m.
Almost all bus lines running along the Obelisk/Microcentro corridor will have changes to their usual stops:
Affected bus lines: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17, 24, 26, 29, 39, 45, 50, 59, 60, 67, 70, 100, 111, 129, 140, 146, and 180.
Where will the detours be? * Buses traveling from north to south usually detour via Córdoba Ave., Libertador Ave., or Paseo Colón Ave. / Leandro N. Alem Ave.
Lines heading south/west usually take Belgrano Ave., Independencia Ave., or Jujuy Ave.
Subway Network Status
- Line B: The Carlos Pellegrini station (and, to a lesser extent, Uruguay) may experience precautionary closures of pedestrian entrances or extremely high passenger volume.
- Line D: 9 de Julio and Tribunales stations may have restrictions.
- Line C: Diagonal Norte / Lavalle Station—expect delays
- Line A: may operate normally, although the Lima and Perú stations could become crowded.
