If you’re between 15 and 30 years old, love to read, and always have a book with you—whether on the bus, the subway, or before bed—mark your calendar for the Fondo de Cultura Económica’s new initiative coming to Buenos Aires : “25 for 25, ” a massive continental initiative that will distribute 2.5 million books completely free of charge throughout Latin America.
In Buenos Aires, on July 8, you can head to Palermo and pick up a book—completely free—to read, share, and keep your mind (and your love of reading) alive.

This free book giveaway in Buenos Aires will take place in person on a first-come, first-served basis at the Fondo’s bookstore and “Arnaldo Orfila Reynal” Cultural Center, located at 4568 Costa Rica Street.
The first 50 people between the ages of 15 and 30 who arrive at the bookstore on July 8 at 5:00 p.m. will receive a set of 5 free books from the collection.
After those first 50 people, anyone between the ages of 15 and 30 who visits the location will receive one free book, chosen at random from the available titles, so it can begin circulating from person to person.
Which authors and books will you be able to find?
The books you’ll be able to receive for free aren’t clearance items or random titles; they’re part of a curated collection featuring historical novels, militant poetry, political essays, and testimonial narratives—books that aim to spark debates about Latin American memory and identity.
Among the most prominent authors are Gabriel García Márquez, Eduardo Galeano, Mario Benedetti, Juan Gelman, Osvaldo Bayer, and Juan Carlos Onetti. In addition, starting July 8, new authors will be added, including Blanca Varela, Manuel Rojas, Andrés Caicedo, Piedad Bonnett, and Raúl Zurita, among others.
The initiative, which also has the support of the Cultural Institute of the Province of Buenos Aires to deliver copies to community libraries, aims to ensure that the books don’t just sit on the shelves, but rather spark conversations, shared readings, and new perspectives among new generations.
