This weekend, on Saturday, June 27, 2026, Avellaneda Park will be ablaze with a new edition of Luz de Fuego, a massive community bonfire that brings together everyone who wants to gather to celebrate the Bonfire of Saints Peter and Paul and burn away the bad to leave it behind. What is “Luz de Fuego” and why is it a neighborhood phenomenon?
For more than three decades, the Chacra de los Remedios Cultural Space has kept this ceremony alive, blending community theater , live music , and the mysticism of the winter solstice in Buenos Aires. If you’ve never taken part in this giant bonfire—this bonfire where you can burn away the bad and leave it behind, and gather around the San Juan bonfire to welcome winter—it’s not too late.
The heart of the Luz de Fuego celebration revolves around two major symbols:
- The Puppet of Misery: This is a giant puppet built collectively by the residents of Parque Avellaneda that represents all the bad things of the year (crises, selfishness, negative vibes—everything you want to burn and leave behind).
- Los Fantochitos: During the pre-event activities, adults and children alike make their own little rag or paper dolls to purify or burn in the bonfire.
When the time comes for the great fire, both the giant effigy and the smaller ones are thrown directly into the flames to be reduced to ashes, burning away the bad and making way for the new and for winter.
It’s a tradition to bring your own little paper “puppet” or a small piece of paper with a list of the things you want the fire to burn and carry away that night.
The parade map: schedule and route of the procession
The Bonfire of St. Peter and St. Paul isn’t a static show to watch while seated—it’s an immersive procession that people join as it winds through the neighborhood streets. Check out the schedule to join in at any point:
- 📍 4:00 p.m. The start: It all begins at the former clandestine detention center “El Olimpo” (Ramón L. Falcón 4250, corner of Olivera). There , the puppet is unveiled and the parade begins.
- 📍 4:50 p.m. First stop: Plaza Che Guevara (Benedetti and Ramón L. Falcón), featuring the first artistic performances.
- 📍 5:05 p.m. Second stop: Intersection of Lacarra Ave. and Bonifacio St.
- 📍 5:30 p.m. Park Entrance: At the corner of Av. Lacarra and Av. Directorio, the Chacra de los Remedios Percussion Workshop will also be taking part.
- 📍 6:00 p.m. Playón del Viejo Tambo
- 📍 6:30 p.m. The Closing Ceremony at the Peuser Courts (inside Avellaneda Park). At that time and place, everyone gathers around the wood pyre, torches are lit in a chain, and the blazing fire consumes the giant effigy.
