Hidden among the cobblestone streets of San Telmo stands a brick facade that stands in stark contrast to the typical architecture of that part of Buenos Aires. It’s the Danish Church of Buenos Aires (Dansk Kirke), a gem of Nordic Neo-Gothic architecture inaugurated in 1931, brimming with Scandinavian symbolism and featuring a miniature ship hanging from the ceiling.
This Sunday, August 9, the church opens its doors for a free one-hour guided tour where you’ll be able to explore its secrets, its architecture, and the legacy of the Danish community in Argentina.
History and architecture: the Nordic gem hidden in San Telmo that you can discover for free this weekend
The first Danish immigrants began arriving in Buenos Aires in the mid-19th century, and to keep their traditions and language alive, they created associations and community centers, just like many other ethnic groups.
In 1929, the congregation purchased the lot at 257 Carlos Calvo and held a competition for the church’s construction. The winning design, titled “Gotland, ” was created by Danish architect Morten F. Rønnow (the same architect who designed the Otto Wulff Building on the corner of Perú and Belgrano).
Three interesting things you’ll see on your visit
- “Jacob’s Ladder” on the facade: The 20-meter-tall square tower and the brick finials at the top symbolize the ladder from Jacob’s dream mentioned in the Bible.
- A ship suspended from the central nave: Upon entering the church, you’ll see a miniature replica of the Danish training ship København suspended from the ceiling and pointing toward the altar.
- Its Lutheran and minimalist style: Unlike traditional Catholic churches, the interior features smooth, entirely white walls, a cross without the image of Christ, and a pipe organ.
