MALBA is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an exhibition that brings the world of Frida Kahlo to Buenos Aires. Starting in September 2026, MALBA presents “Viva Frida,” an exhibition that reveals the Mexican artist’s secret world through personal items never before seen in the country, love letters, and her masterpieces.
Starting September 20, 2026, the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires opens its doors to “Viva Frida, ” a direct journey into the world of Frida Kahlo. More than just an exhibition, this show is an opportunity to see the Frida who remained hidden behind the walls of the Blue House for decades, alongside her finest works of art.
The Treasures of Frida Kahlo’s Blue House Come to Buenos Aires
The “Viva Frida” exhibition is undoubtedly one of the most important art exhibitions in Buenos Aires because it includes pieces that remained under lock and key by order of Diego Rivera until 2004. That’s why, in this Frida Kahlo exhibition, you’ll discover photographs, letters, jewelry, and even the orthopedic corsets and traditional dresses that Frida made part of her identity.
This exhibition is a must-see because among the items on display you’ll find iconic garments like huipiles and skirts that shaped her image, intimate documents such as letters and diaries that reveal her relationship with art and politics, as well as jewelry and accessories that help you understand her connection to her Mexican roots.
A Reunion with “Diego and I”
One of the highlights of your visit to the Malba is the display of works that the museum has preserved under the stewardship of its founder, Eduardo Costantini. Among them is the piece “Diego and I” (1949), the last bust self-portrait painted by Frida before her death, which broke world records at auction. Alongside it is “Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot” (1942), one of the most beloved pieces in the museum’s permanent collection.
Behind the Malba is Eduardo Costantini, the businessman and collector who assembled one of Argentina’s most valuable collections of Latin American art and transformed it into a museum. He is a regular at major international auctions, bringing pieces to the country so they do not remain locked away in private collections. That’s how, in 2021, he paid nearly $35 million for “Diego and I, ” Frida’s record-breaking work that is now the museum’s star attraction.
