If you love theater and can’t find a show on the Buenos Aires billboard that appeals to you, if you want something that will surprise you and immerse you in an unusual setting, you can’t miss what is perhaps the most unusual play currently in Buenos Aires —because this play takes place in a cemetery, and you move through it alongside the graves and mysteries.
If settings are everything in theater, this play is very special because its setting is the Chacarita Cemetery, more specifically the Sixth Pavilion of this Buenos Aires cemetery.
The play is called Una obra más real que la del mundo (A Play More Real Than the World) and is a production by the company La Mujer Mutante, now in its seventh season, which invites you to experience theater in an unconventional way: walking among graves.
Theater in motion in a cemetery mausoleum
There are no seats or traditional stage here. The play is a roughly two-hour performance walk through the Sixth Pantheon, a monumental structure designed by architect Itala Fulvia Villa within the cemetery.

During the tour, the actors serve as guides who lead you through this brutalist labyrinth where history, nature, urban philosophy, and funeral rituals intertwine. The experience offers more than just viewing: it’s about inhabiting that space, letting yourself be swept up in what’s happening, and becoming part of a community in constant motion.
An experience between the real and the symbolic
“A play more real than the world itself” navigates that fine line between fiction and reality. Amid galleries, corridors, and hidden corners, questions arise about death, memory, and what we avoid facing in everyday life.
The setting is no accident: the Chacarita Cemetery, unlike other more monumental spaces such as Recoleta, is a place deeply connected to the daily lives of Buenos Aires residents. Here lie entire generations of neighbors, anonymous stories, and fragments of the city.
If you’re interested in plays set in unusual and atypical locations in Buenos Aires, we’d like to tell you that this play is part of the SITE Buenos Aires circuit, where you can discover other plays that, like this one, take place in unconventional spots around the city,
Free admission: when are the performances?
