This Friday, July 24, at 6:00 p.m., a Neo-Gothic church— a hidden gem in the Constitución neighborhood—will open its doors for a spectacular symphonic concert with free admission. With a repertoire ranging from Baroque to Hollywood film scores and Piazzolla, the Buenos Aires City Symphonic Band will perform for free at the majestic Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
A stellar repertoire: from Bach and Mozart to John Williams and Piazzolla—free in July
On July 24, the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary—one of Buenos Aires’ lesser-known churches, yet one that exudes a unique neo-Gothic atmosphere—will serve as the venue for a free concert led by conductor Carlos David Jaimes, featuring the City of Buenos Aires Symphonic Band and musicians participating in the 2026 Seminar on Musical Integration and Practice.
The concert program spans different eras and styles: you’ll be able to hear pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, then let yourself be carried away by the cinematic melodies of John Williams (the composer of soundtracks for Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park), and close out with the tango-infused style of Astor Piazzolla.
The setting: the Neo-Gothic gem that withstood the highway
Much of the magic of this plan for the July weekend lies in the music, but the beauty provided by the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is also undeniable. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a Neo-Gothic church designed by architect Rómulo Ayerza and inaugurated in 1923. It has two 53-meter-tall towers and some fascinating secrets that are worth discovering while you’re enjoying the concert:
This church features nine stained-glass windows, each 9 meters high, brought directly from the F. Mayer company in Munich, Germany, and a historic organ by the German firm E. F. Walcker & Co. —one of the few instruments of this brand remaining in Catholic churches in Buenos Aires.
The church was on the verge of being demolished during the last military dictatorship to make way for the Frondizi Highway, but the neighbors managed to save it, so the highway’s route was rerouted.
Admission to the concert is strictly on a first-come, first-served basis until the church reaches capacity. Since this is a free event, we recommend arriving about 30 to 40 minutes early to secure a good seat.
