What Is a “Chamber of Wonders” and Why You Should Check It Out
The Berni Hall at the Borges Cultural Center has been completely transformed to host “Wunderkammer” (Chamber of Wonders), the new exhibition by Argentine artist Nicola Costantino. This new exhibition in Buenos Aires is inspired by the old cabinets of curiosities from before the 20th century, except that in this one, the mysteries, curiosities, and exotic objects are transformed into an interactive exhibition.
Before museums as we know them today existed, nobles and scientists of the Renaissance and the 19th century collected exotic objects, strange artifacts, and natural curiosities in rooms called Wunderkammer or “Chamber of Wonders.”
This exhibition recreates that spirit but with a modern, technological twist: as soon as you walk through the door, you stop being a mere spectator and become an explorer of secrets. Some of the exotic wonders you’ll be able to see include:
- A fortune-telling machine that reads your destiny: Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a mechanical piece called “Aztec Flower,” where pressing a button will reveal a message.
- A “ghost” piano: As you walk through the hallways, you’ll discover an antique piano surrounded by threads and silk cocoons that plays music on its own.
- Interactive and kinetic art: As you walk through the exhibition, you’ll encounter hydrokinetic sculptures, hidden animations, videos, and small display cases where you’ll have to peek inside to discover the mystery they hold.
