Buenos Aires opens a new restaurant in a 1922 Round House with Curved Walls designed by the same architect of Palacio Barolo Do you know which one it is?
If you were looking for a different place to eat in Buenos Aires, one of those that combines history, design and a special dining experience, Casa Palanti is your next plan. The restaurant has just opened in the mythical Casa Redonda, a building you surely know and have seen a thousand times if you have been in Barrio Parque. It was designed in 1922 by Italian architect Mario Palanti, the same creator of Palacio Barolo and Palacio Salvo in Uruguay.
La Casa Redonda is an icon of Buenos Aires heritage and is located in one of the most beautiful corners of the city: it was once a circular house, where all the walls are curved, with a lookout tower on top and Art Nouveau details such as wood and unique stained glass windows.
However, what makes this Round House so special is much more than that: many relate its entire style to the Divine Comedy, a frequent nod to Palanti’s work. Don’t forget that he also designed Palazzo Barolo, creating every detail with Dante Alighieri’s work and the passage from hell through purgatory to paradise in mind. Did you know that the faces of Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy, and his beloved Beatrice can be seen on its wooden gate?
The house was a family residence, diplomatic headquarters (it became the Iranian embassy) and later a gallery and showroom, before its recent restoration to become a restaurant where the curved walls envelop you like in a labyrinth and its rooms are inspired by Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
A restaurant in a Round House: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise between one dish and the next.
The menu is extensive, you will find a selection of cheeses, rigatoni with caviar, wagyu strip steak, roasted red bell pepper with walnuts, dulce de leche flan, coffee and sweets. The wine selection accompanies the dishes to perfection and the ambience is perfect for an outing with someone special.
Eating at Casa Palanti is like visiting a part of Buenos Aires’ heritage from the inside, as well as bringing back to light one of the most important architects of the city. Come and visit it and at least take a look and see what hell or purgatory looks like from the inside.
