Buenos Aires is home to many nationalities and religions. If you’ve ever walked past the Buddhist temple on Cramer Avenue and always wanted to go inside, you’re in luck because on July 3, the Fo Guang Shan Monastery is opening its doors for a free guided tour.
A little piece of Taiwan right in the heart of Buenos Aires
The Fo Guang Shan Monastery (part of the IBPS Argentina Buddhist Association) is part of a global community network with more than 200 centers dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism with a humanistic approach.
The history of this corner of Buenos Aires began in 1992 following a visit by the great master Hsing Yun. A few years later, in 1996, the current plot of land was donated to build what is now a key cultural and spiritual center in Buenos Aires, officially inaugurated in 1997.
If you join the guided tour on July 3 at 10 a.m., you won’t just be amazed by its architecture. There are many details that will surprise you:
- The “Happy Buddha” (Smiling Buddha): One of the temple’s most beloved figures. Tradition holds that you should entrust your daily anxieties and worries to this Buddha, and in return, he will give you joy and smiles.
- Around the temple, you’ll find little colored scrolls with encouraging phrases and poetic reflections to take home with you.
- This Buddhist monastery offers courses in meditation, yoga, tai chi, qigong, kung fu, and even vegetarian cooking and Chinese language workshops.
If you can’t make it to the guided tour, you can also explore its tea room, where you can enjoy pastries and vegetarian dishes while browsing its free library of Eastern philosophy . The monastery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
