Is there anyone who doesn’t enjoy stopping by a bakery and getting lost in the aroma of bread or pastries? Now you have to let your nose get lost in the aromas of a bakery in the Saavedra neighborhood that , after three generations of bakers working tirelessly, has just received the international award for the best traditional bakery in the world. We’ll tell you where it is and what makes it so special.
The secret of the world’s best traditional bakery: it’s in Buenos Aires and has a 1931 oven
Artiaga was named the world’s best traditional bakery by the Bake and Brew Awards. Founded in 1931 and acquired by the Rodríguez family in the early 1980s, Artiaga is much more than a counter full of delicious treats—it’s a piece of history, since its traditional oven has been running nonstop since 1931 and will soon celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Today, the third generation of the family combines the teachings of their immigrant grandparents with modern techniques that have won over not only the palates of Saavedra’s residents but also those of the judges at the Bake & Brew Awards’“Heritage Craft Bakery of the Year 2026.”
What you absolutely must order at Artiaga (even if you want to eat everything)
If it’s your first time visiting this Buenos Aires bakery, you’ll find timeless classics and unique delicacies that are a must-have in your paper bag:
- The World Cup Panettone: Forget traditional sweet bread. At Artiaga, they’re world runners-up (Milan 2025). You have to try the Panettone Buenos Aires: pecans, coffee, chocolate, and dulce de leche. It’s made with organic flours and undergoes an extremely long fermentation process.
- The “Paracaidista”: A pastry made exclusively at Artiaga that was created by chance—perfect to enjoy with a few cups of mate.
- The unbeatable classics: Its butter croissants, palmeritas, chipás, and sourdough bread are a one-way ticket to heaven.
If your stomach is telling you that you have to try something fresh from this century-old oven, the best time to go is between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. That’s when you’ll find the widest variety of pastries fresh out of the oven.
