Did you know that in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires there is a bookstore hidden inside a 17th century convent? If you are an inveterate seeker of rare and out-of-print books or if you simply love the idea of entering an old convent and discovering this bookstore hidden among its gardens and walls, you must visit it.
A convent with a beautiful old bookstore: the perfect combination in San Nicolás
On Reconquista Street at 200, is the Convento Grande San Ramón Nonato, built in 1603 by Italian Jesuits. Today it is a beautiful building very well preserved despite the years that houses, in addition to its offices, multiple spaces for cultural activities, workshops, concerts and, of course, there is a specialized bookstore hidden from the eyes of those who pass by the door every day.
The bookstore that hides behind its walls is called Textos Cautivos (Captive Texts) and although it might seem to be a religious bookstore, it is not. It is a bookstore specializing in rare, out-of-print books and old editions, those pearls that experts (and why not, also the curious) are dying to discover. One of the most hidden bookstores in Buenos Aires.
Obviously you will find fiction, poetry, history, philosophy and art, theater and literary criticism, used books, special editions and even relics. Did you know that this bookstore has a 1930 edition of Martín Fierro and the first edition of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude?
If discovering a 400-year-old convent inside or visiting a mysterious and special bookstore is not enough for you, we tell you that this convent also has a beautiful interior garden surrounded by greenery so you can get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, take 5 minutes and have a cup of tea in its cafeteria.
